Fancy dress day

Apparently they always look like this

Saturday and all's well. The lazy hazy morning sunshine bathing the Bestival site belies the bacchanalian scenes of organised chaos we saw last night.

As befits a largely nocturnal event, the night began at 11pm with the arrival of riotously entertaining gypsy punks Gogol Bordello on the main stage. Make no mistake, they're an audaciously obscure choice of headline act - especially when compared to Saturday's top bill, Pet Shop Boys, and Scissor Sisters' promised Sunday slot - but crikey they're spectacular. Who'd have guessed that a mix of Ukrainian folk, cabaret performance art, fiddles and dancing would steal the soul of Bestival? Actually, reading that sentence again, it's hardly surprising...

Ex-British Sea Power chap Eamon and his band Brakes take up the torch in the Rock 'N' Roll tent, bristling with energy and eliciting mass craziness among the merrily sozzled masses. And as for DJ Yoda's audio-visual overload, suffice to say there were as many boogly-eyed ravers dancing outside the Fat Tuesday tent as there were squished under the canopy.

Back to today, did we mention the fancy dress? With the grand parade set to take place this afternoon, there are going to be so many outlandish outfits, wigs and creative displays of make-up application on display that the only people who'll look remotely silly are those who make no effort at all. And we, fair reader, are not falling into that particular trap, oh no.
